Wordless Connections Exhibit

Wordless Connections
The "Wordless Connections" exhibit I curated at the Oliver Art Center in Frankfort, Michigan is coming to a close this Friday, June 9th. Today I look back to a year ago when I was looking for two other abstract artists to join me in showcasing our work in the spacious gallery at the Oliver.
Cherie Correll is an experimental artist who creates wonderful sculpture assemblages and 2D work using found objects, printmaking, collage, painting and drawing. Cherie was one of the first artist friends I met after moving from Chicago to Northern Michigan seven years ago. I was happy when she said she would join me in putting her work in the show.

I knew I wanted a third artist who would contribute sculpture and decided to start my search online. As soon as I saw the search results for "Michigan sculptor" I was captivated by the work of Rebecca Casement who does abstract ceramic and other sculpture using wire, plaster, fiber, and found materials. Her work comes from deeply personal (and universal) experiences and perceptions of loss, fear, joy and transformation.

I am so very grateful to have had the experience of joining with Cherie and Rebecca in creating our exhibit. In the gallery space our work generated interaction and dialogue between the different materials and approaches. Themes of history and process, physicality and bodily felt expression; formal elements of color, shape, line, and depth. The art asks the viewer to let go of words and labels... to open to art as sensory experience.

Going forward I feel a new confidence in the power of my art to build "wordless connections".
Thank you to the Oliver Art Center, especially gallery coordinator, Julie Pierce and Director, Tamara Hoffbauer.
So, now I'm heading out to the studio to continue work. on stretching canvases for my next series!
